چکیده

Microwave attenuation in rain at C-band. observed in radar data from Alberta. Canada, has been assessed by means of two different estimators: one employing KDP measured simultaneously by an S-band radar and the other a comparison of synchronised Sand C-band reflectivity measurements. While good agreement between the two has been found in some cases, in others the second method gave a larger estimate than the first by up to a factor of two. It is possible that the KDP method is underestimating the attenuation due to the assumption of a Marshall-Palmer drop size distribution which does not accurately enough represent the true drop size distribution present.

Retrieval of Raindrop Size Distribution, Vertical Air Velocity and Water Vapor Attenuation Using Dual-Wavelength Doppler Radar Observations

Two techniques for retrieving the slope and intercept parameters of an assumed exponential raindrop size distribution (RSD), vertical air velocity, and attenuation by precipitation and water vapor in light stratiform rain using observations by airborne, nadir looking dual-wavelength (X-band, 3.2 crn and W-band, 3.2 rnm) radars are presented. In both techniques, the slope parameter of the RSD an...

On Study of Air/Space-borne Dual-Wavelength Radar for Estimates of Rain Profiles

In this study, a framework is discussed to apply aidspace-borne dual-wavelength radar for the estimation of characteristic parameters of hydrometeors. The focus of our study is on the Global Precipitation Measurements (GPM) precipitation radar, a dual-wavelength radar that operates at Ku (13.8 GHz) and Ka (35 GHz) bands. As the droplet size distributions (DSD) of rain are expressed as the Gamma...

On the Equivalence of Dual-Wavelength and Dual-Polarization Equations for Estimation of the Raindrop Size Distribution

For airand spaceborne weather radars, which typically operate at frequencies of 10 GHz and above, attenuation correction is usually an essential part of any rain estimation procedure. For ground-based radars, where the maximum range within the precipitation is usually much greater than that from airor spaceborne radars, attenuation correction becomes increasingly important at frequencies above ...

Stochastic Filtering of Rain Pro les using Radar, Surface-Referenced Radar, or Combined Radar/Radiometer Measurements

This paper describes a computationally e cient nearly-optimal Bayesian algorithm to estimate rain (and drop-size-distribution) pro les, given a radar re ectivity pro le at a single attenuating wavelength. In addition to estimating the averages of all the mutually ambiguous combinations of rain parameters that can produce the data observed, the approach also calculates the r.m.s. uncertainty in ...

Rain Heights Over the Oceans: Relation to Rain Rates

Rain over the oceans causes attenuation of communication and radar signals for satellites and backscatter to satellite radars. To determine the attenuation and backscatter, one must know the height of the rain in a storm, and must be able to find it from a satellite measurement likely to be available. Microwave radiometers on satellites can provide estimates of rain rates, and therefore relatin...
